Janovice is in the Frýdek-Místek District, about 5 km north-east of Frýdlant nad Ostravicí. In 2025, the municipality had around 2,010 residents.
The earliest mention of the village is in a parish-office record from 1447; it is listed in an urbar in 1573. The Neo-Gothic Church of St Joseph was designed by Ferdinand Heinrich from Frýdek, was consecrated in 1891 and has been a cultural monument since 2001. The remains of the medieval Hradisko castle and Petra Bezruče Park are local sights; the outlaw Ondráš, born in Janovice in 1680, is a figure in Silesian folk legends. In Bystré, a local part of Janovice, a memorial to the victims of both world wars stands in front of the former school; it was unveiled on 28 October 1946.
