The municipality of Hukvaldy lies in the foothills of the Moravian-Silesian Beskids. It comprises five parts: Hukvaldy, Horní and Dolní Sklenov, Rychaltice and Krnalovice. The first recorded mention of the municipality dates to 1228.

The ruins of Hukvaldy Castle, documented between 1257 and 1285, are open to the public, and the massive palace offers a view across the landscape. The game preserve around the castle hill is among the oldest in Czechia; gamekeeping has been documented there since 1567, and fallow deer are bred there. Leoš Janáček's birthplace, a former school, now houses the tourist information centre, the composer's memorial room and a gallery; the separate Janáček Memorial is in a house he bought in 1921, whose original interiors have been preserved, and belongs to the Leoš Janáček Foundation. The Baroque Church of St Maximilian in the centre was built in 1759, and Janáček played its organ; the municipality is a partner of the International Music Festival Janáčkovy Hukvaldy.
